Critical Thinking

3. Is what you see the true?
In today's digital age, where information spreads at the speed of light, it's easy to be deceived by false news. To avoid falling victim to manipulation, it's essential to develop critical thinking skills. Before believing any information, we should ask ourselves a few questions: Who is the author of this message? What are their motives? Is the information supported by evidence? Is it consistent with what we already know about the topic? The answers to these questions will help us assess the credibility of the source and avoid making incorrect conclusions.
Introduction to the Topic: Deepfake:
In recent years, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have given rise to a phenomenon known as deepfake. The name comes from combining deep learning and fake. Deepfake technology enables the manipulation of video and audio content in a way that appears highly realistic. For instance, it can make someone on video seem to say something they never said or even place one person’s face onto someone else’s body.
While this technology can be used for creative purposes (e.g., in movies or advertising), it also poses significant risks, such as spreading misinformation, manipulating public opinion, or violating privacy. This makes the ability to recognize deepfakes increasingly important in today’s world.
Why Should You Learn About Deepfake?
• Misinformation: Deepfakes can be used to create fake news or manipulate recordings in ways that mislead viewers.
• Personal Security: This technology is sometimes used to produce harmful content, such as fake compromising videos.
• Creative Applications: On the positive side, deepfake offers intriguing possibilities in the entertainment industry, like recreating deceased actors for films.
In this module, you will learn how deepfake technology works, explore examples of its uses, and gain skills to recognize manipulated content.Exercise: Identify the Deepfake.
Objective
Participants will learn to identify potentially manipulated video and audio content by applying tips for recognizing deepfakes.
Instructions:
1. Analyze the Materials
You will be presented with several short videos (or audio recordings). Each of them could be:
o Authentic
o Manipulated using deepfake technology
Your task is to watch or listen to each piece of content and determine whether you think it is real or fake.
2. Tips for Analysis:
o Pay attention to lip movements and their synchronization with the audio.
o Check if eye blinking looks natural. Early deepfakes often struggled with this.
o Observe the lighting and shadows – do they appear realistic?
o Focus on audio quality – the voice may sound unnatural.
